Warning: Snake Collecting Is Addictive

I have 23 snakes living in my basement.  No, they are not roving around like crocodiles, they each have their own heated environments complete with substrate, hide and water dish.  You might think that I have collecting snakes for a long time to have so many, not so.  I just started this hobby at the beginning of September, so roughly six weeks ago.  I had no idea that I wanted to get into this until I met this woman who was selling her snake collection on Craigslist.  As fate would have it, I went to her house and promptly spent $800. on snakes.  Her enthusiasm was catchy.  The rest of my collection came from two trips to the Michigan Reptile Show in Taylor, MI.  If snakes were crack, I would be a crackhead by now.  I guess I could call myself a "snakehead"(others call me "The Snake Lady").

I have always liked snakes and used to spend my childhood days hunting for them in vacant lots and wooded areas.  For this I blame my grandmother.  When I was a four year old my grandma would tell me stories of her childhood on a farm in Illinois.  Part of this narrative included three stories about my grandmother walking to school through the cornfield and coming upon snakes in the act of doing snake things.  One was swallowing eggs in a nest.  One was a puff-adder that puffed up his head at her and the next one was eating baby rabbits.  Well, with my adventurous spirit, I loved these stories and asked her to tell them again and again.  That began my fasination with snakes.

Ball Pythons Rule!

Yes my favorite snake is the Ball Python.  There are so many things to love about this creature.  First, they are beautiful!  Next, they are shy and slow moving.  If you learn how to handle them with sensitivity, they almost never become cranky and strike at you.  Finally, the breeding of these snakes has become extremely interesting with over 140 different morphs that you can create with a little genetic science.  There are many web sites that show examples of these different colors and patterns that have been created and established.  This breed is unique in it's variety and exciting breeding outcomes.  I have been working on getting breeding pairs to create some really amazing looking snakes.  I can't wait to get started on this project! www.worldofballpythons.com
